The shift from the hospital to home, and the many adjustments can be a strain to the family.

The period of convalescence can also be a prize of wining back the parent from the jaws of death and crisis, ours is so with my papa.

Every day is so different, with the care, that the last morning was a sit out with him, under the shade of the garden trees and singing our lost and long forgotten nursery rhymes, school song and farewell song with the tunes of Auld Lang Syne, the sounds of which he is so familiar with and the tones of my voice.

The sharing of this may seem very odd for some, but for now my world is here at home with my papa, who is slowing getting back to show his gleam and brightness thro' his eyes and a rare smile from his heart.

The play continues with no rules and all love and care.

Laughter as a medicine and a meditation

It was a get together of a club in Namakkal, called as happiness club.
They had decided to have a debate on the best effect of laughter was for the body or the mind.

The teams had straight away agreed the goodness was there and there was no doubt on that, but the difference was only the results, was it limited to the body or the presence of the mind itself.

The readers digest has a separate page for the jokes titled as " laughter the best medicine", with no doubts left for the medical profession to argue at all.

The words medicine and meditation have a common origin, and it was no better place to have it than at this togetherness , where the whole auditorium was up with peals of laughter.

Sunny oil bath leads to strong teeth and bones

It was another of those lazy saturday mornings.

A container of cold pressed sesame oil was got, a packet full of grounded arapu leaves,( i have yet to find the English name for it) change clothes were collected, and of course that neem twig and off i was to have an oil bath.

The morning sun was at the a slant and i was into oiling myself ,lazyly chewing the twig and letting my system have itself a chemical reaction of the oil,the sun light and what ever else that was there.

Some folks use shikakai powder, other shampoos, i prefer the powder of a local plant which has an oil cleaning effect we call it arapu, some folks also use the bark, it also offers a shampoo like solution.
a half an hour of a good sun bath , and buckets of spring water from the well, adds to the freshness of a good oil bath on a saturday morning.

No breaking fast today till lunch time, goody lunch awaits me.

Writing exercises-to bring on a good sign

During our school days, we had those 4 liners to practise our handwriting,like i said it is a misnomer, it should have been finger-writing.

The writer was given a set of exercises,which we dutifully followed and still do at times of nostalgic school thoughts of " those were the days".

Things seem to have changed for the better or for the worse, with lots of sharing with e- mails and less of documentation and paper work, yet the answer sheet is one thing that keeps the writing work steady, at least for the future times of a political high post when u have to sign a lot of bills.

For now the people with posts are regular with their signing in of so many new laws that they don't have to do writing exercises as such , their signatures for passing this bill and then the next, a new one is already on the table.

If only they had reading exercises too, many of those bills would not have been passed, a shame we do not have similar reading exercises , for better results ,of a sharper mind and a courageous heart.

Seasonal bean brings the family together

The December month brings on the seasonal beans to the market.

This being a once a year harvest, all homes make a dash for it,the peeling of the beans and the other variety of soaking and further peelings can bring on family members under the roof, or to the table for gossiping.

The nuclear family can get the hubby and wife to bring on an act of togetherness,cleaning the beans and discussing issues of the family.

We had a dish of brinjals, and these beans, with spice and curry, go great with rice.

Travelling on the road of prescribed vitamins

I got the picture mentally saved .

I asked the representative where does the vitamin that he is marketing got from in that array of fruits, he said he did not know, i requested him to take that as a company work to be submitted for the next visit.

The next visit and further visits did not bring on results, and neither did he take the spirit to get to know.

I volunteered and showed him most synthetic vitamins are got from petrochemical derivatives, that we prescribe to our patients.

He was shocked and so was I. (different reasons)

Chill days seek Chilli dishes

We are folks who are used to summer heat, sweating,with cottons and hot walls to bake chappathis.

The winter with temperatures just touching 15 c at night and around 20 c during days is literally not bearable to us.

One could find us with shawls, pull overs and jute caps to keep warm.

There are some who find escapes with an eatable of the spicy kind, and in our area, the food world has been taken over with adding chilli to any thing and every thing, to make the stomach warm and the nose drip.

A chilli this and a chilli that , from cauliflower to mushrooms and now parathas and even a chill idli.

May we all manage to stay warm with our ways, till the coming of march.

The laws that come on, from the politicians , who are bought by the industries, seem too scary for the honorable profession of Medicine, that a trust in oneself is all that is left for the Doctor for the benefit of his patients.

I had a chance to see this slogan " war is peace" on my screen, i tried to fathom the depth of the slogan from the roots of my heart, to the base of my intelligence, i could see nothing.

Then i remembered that story that if u want to see God, u must have the tip of that nose cut and bleeding only then visibility happens.

A vacation at work

We villagers have a life of simplicity and can even manage a life style with out a clock, but now that the kids are present and sending them to school or college ,at a distance, the time machine has started to work.

Our days of action are a routine , and easy going that we are not stressed to take a break, and during them if any vacation does come in, it would still be a part, and things would work as usual.

In this sense a vacation is a term that is a puzzle, and with leaders or folks in high places , vacationing to run away to distant lands to forget their work, sounds more puzzling for us who cannot actually take a vacation.

If ones does not love their work and get stressed to have a need to run and let out steam , there is something that needs to be thought of.

The judiciary have lost their right to fight for their clients with wit and humour and laws laid out in their constitution, it has become a stab for all humanity, the judges can hang their heads in shame.

What can be proved , can be disproved with an intelligent argument , innocence is stable.

One can only prove a crime, innocence is there for u to see, it cant be proved.

A friend turns a foe

Thirupathy used to be a yearly pilgrimage for my folks, and we had used a bus trip till Katpadi, and a train ride to reach the mountain foot hills.

There are two ways to reach the hill top mountain temple of thirumalai thirupathy,the bus route and the other is the walkers path, that is wonderfully laid with steps, lights and nature s beauty.

The queue for the bus trip used to be a horror, and the walk around the temple pragarams,a day and a night mare of waiting to get to see the deity,With the Darshan, the whole tiredness and difficulty is forgotten.

I got to hear and see about Konganavar Siddar, who was the one who got the place consecrated, and his place is at the north west corner of the temple tank.( unknown to many)

The slogums within the temple is continuous and soothing and more.

There is another which i heard about recently, the ones who manage the lines and the crowd with their services, voicing "jarugandi jarugandi" move move, within the santum santorum.

We have already had many a heart sharing episode happening in the birthing ward,with all of them forgotten or ending with the cries of the new born, and the welcoming of another creation.

The difficulties and happenings of all that takes place in the birthing place, is something we men are never qualified to express, but we do have hearts that feel, and so this sharing.

We men may not know , but we can at least start with a help in the change in the term of that ward, may be if we send a quest many a new term would come to change from labour to some thing else.

With the advancement in obstetrics, the laborious delivery has undergone many a change and with it more innovations and planning .

I had taken my kid for one of the meets sponsored by a company that promoted anti rabies vaccine, the kid was quiet till a slide said , do not sprinkle any turmeric powder on any wound.

The maize corn,is a staple food for us, and eaten after being boiled and salted.

we seem to have forgotten this food, as much of it is being sent away and sold before we get to even see them for sales.

There were days when we went to the cinema it used to be full of chewed sugar cane fibres and corn cobs, eaten by folks of the previous shows.

The high fructose corn syrup industry seems to have completely covered the produce, as their returns are plentiful from the bakers, pharmacy , confectioneries and all the products that u pick up at grocery shelves.

Recently the hfcs as it is shortened , has been found to be the cause of obesity, with over eating and addiction to it.

The mix of cuisines at the buffet dinners and the satiety centre forgetting to use the word " enough" the onset of indigestion is a sure happening.

Many a house hold in our village has pre-breakfast with tapioca, hot steaming tapioca were carried in a bamboo basket on the head and sold to hungry kids, toiling moms and aged parents.

The curved knife that is used is handy, and we wait for the seller to give us that "pissuku" as it is called that comes as a bonus with the buy.

It is rich and energetic and keeps us full for the time the breakfast is ready , and many are off to work, till lunch time.

Many farmers grows these tapioca around our village and they are traded across the country from here.

Many a damsel in our village would have had illusions of playing tennis on the court,with high skirts or low tops,watching the opens across the globe, but with the culture and non playing husbands, things are difficult for imaginations to work out.

Cauvery flows out through a leaky pipe

Many a pipe gets to leak due to a sudden force of flow, or a faulty tube.

On the path of our morning walk through the village street is a water way made recently with the sudden leak in a drinking water underground pipe, which comes from Cauvery river.

The water seeping out makes a dance of the sand particles with the flow,the water found a way to the nearest gutter and cut a pathway for itself.

It will continue this way till, the public works department gets a notification or the roadways gets a call for damage to its road, either way it will take some time, and till then many a pedestrian will walk over it and the kids will wade and play, for photographers and writers it will be a theme for a work out.

A blend of rains and shines

It was a day of engagements,a family function in the morning brought all our country cousins to the hall , with the band of village musicians playing and leading the grooms party.

The morning had been shining , but the weather changed and re- changed to bring on rains in a matter of minutes, to clear away soon, one could not believe that the weather could do an act of redressing so quickly, on stage.

There was this feeling in me, what has my rambling and ranting on fluoride got to do with our indian bindi.

We in india have a tradition of our women folk keeping the bindi, and even men keeping a mark on the forehead, each one has a reason, and some a custom through the family.

There are more folks who are scared and allergic to peanuts than we know,this is an alternative method where some get over that reaction, what ever it may be.

In our place we get a variety called kodi kai, we prefer that.

The peanuts are washed and boiled with salt to taste and after an experienced wait, the water is drained, cooled,de-podded and relished.

The frying with sand is a variety that could bring on fatty worries, this way it is avoided, for a tea time snack.

We south Indians are famous for our dosais and idlies, made with rice dough, you will find even in Srinagar,push carts selling the masala dosais.

This evening my lady made cholam dosais, she normally gets the cholam and has them milled.

Today was an exception we got a packet of ready made flour of cholam and she made a blend of this and urud dal, the dough was quickly done with the addition of water, fermentation is required in this preparation, she added onions and chillies and salt to taste

The dinner was tasty with a side dish of coconut chutney.

Many moons ago, on the way back home from a picnic, i noticed some flowers on the roadside house, i was given a bouquet on expressing the beautyness of them, and also some onion bulbs, to bring on our own flowers.

I dug and planted the onion bulbs, and grassy leaves grew and grew, and when the monsoon rains came , the flowers bloomed, they seemed to wait for the rains, our watering did not offer their wants.

Vanishing birds, bees and butterflies

Our garden had always been a space where the birds and the butterflies used to come to play hide and seek,and the bees make their hive, it has been a constant source of chattering, fluttering and humming.

Things are changing now with us having to seek and search for them, the bees do not seem to like our lush greenish trees any more , the butterflies do not sense our fragrant flowers and rich pollen, the birds do not see our coconut shell bird bath and the seeds of rye and millet.

Where have they all gone? are they on a strike to make us realise our happiness was with their presence, and this realisation with their absence.

A rich soup of chow chow

This rich soup is for those who work to bring on a sweat to the brow, and not for the easy sedentary under the fan toilers.

The chow chow is washed, peeled and cut into pieces, and boiled,with green gram, the greens of the day and tomatoes.

The large pieces of the boiled chow chow,greens and green grams are blended for 5 seconds and reboiled for a few minutes, with salt, pepper and cumin seeds.

The thick soup is ready to be served with coriander leaves to season and appetise.

We have always been taught to date our writings, to let us know when we had thougtwaves or have written to friends and cousins.

Having different nationalities and directions, our dates and months could easily be confused.

I had made a change to this, a long time back when i myself could not make out what month and date it was on a certain situation.

5 -10 -2011, could mean 10 Th of May, or 5 Th of October, depending if u are in United States or in India.

How it would be if we were taught to write our date, month and year, for us to know it right when we shift continents, or the sheet shifts.

The ayutha pooja time is a cleaning the junk holiday, and vacation for the college kids.

We never knew reasons , to make a sweet dish, but now we are making the kids vacation of even 2 days a reasonable sweet dish time.

I was given a list of things to buy for the home coming kid,

Pala greens, coriander, peanuts,snacks of mixtures of more peanuts.

Calls were placed to find the closing of the evening class and bus timings, and the kid was at home at 11. 30 pm.

Any time is good time for laddus, which we had saved from the ants , and prepared with love and care.

The college buses too are plying from far away towns to gather their students.

The transport departments have made a rule to write slogans of caution and ecological reminders on the transports." save rain water", " children inside drive carefully".

At times i wish the vehicles had such slogans written at eye level to the drivers too, they are like the fast track racers.

The teaching institutions have come up across the fields of farms like crops, with semester yield.

There was a young chap i asked , how is his coaching at his institution, ohh very fitting to the name sir!!!! i was puzzled and he explained, Study, Revise and Vomit.

Fitting to the initials of the institute,but they are the ones who yield the best scores, naturally, flogging and mugging brings the highest grades.

There is a passing over tradition, in our village where the newly married couple are invited by the cousins for dinner.

The slim kiddy looking couple are well fed, for their prosperity in body and mind and spirit, and a healthy well being of their future generations.

The original dishes have been forgotten and now all the latest junk has been added.

Some families do continue traditional vegetarian dishes of sweets, made from country sugar,rice and sambar, with drum stick, and radish, mashed brinjals as a side dish, unripe banana as a vegetable , and bananas as a fruit to end up.

Drum stick has been found to have an androgenic effect, and the brinjals as has been rightly termed as the egg plants has oestrogenic properties.

These keep the body balanced and the necessary effects brought on.

Soup - time

The gap between lunch and dinner , is a large spaced one.

For those who are not used to taking those oiled fried bajjis and bondas,it could be a difficult time for the women of the home to satisfy these health conscious folks.

One menu for those 5 'o clock ones is the vegetable soup.

Last evening we had carrot soup, normally we have it along with beans, but the beans were not to the satisfaction of my lady , so out they went.

The carrots were washed and cut into thin small pieces,this time a special greens meant for the next days lunch, went with the carrots , they were boiled well with the spices on the kitchen slab,seeragam, (cumin seeds)and salt and chilli powder to taste.

The vegetables could be a waste if the elders in the home would not eat it, and so a blender is used to mash the vegetables and boil again for some time

and the end result is what u see, and can smell if u close your eyes.

This could be an appetiser for an early dinner of chappatis.

I am a very straightforward person.
Maybe the world is round for a reason, but I am not one of the world.

My elders instructed me, never sleep with a boy. I wondered, what is the harm in sleeping?
I can sleep wherever I want, when I want, with whom I want!!
After all if I happen to be travelling, I have to sleep with so many boys/men!!
Big deal!
So no one tried to explain to me what sleep really meant and I found out much later that it was something else!

Similar thing happened sometime ago, where a friend said he found his wife with another couple in a room.
Naturally he kept saying and I kept wondering, why was he upset?
This time of course, I got it cleared sooner!

Same for drinking, I thought why not drink? God! everybody drinks! Who on earth doesn't drink?
Water for example could only be drunk! So yes, I do drink!

Grrr Why can't people talk to the point instead of going round and round and having multiple meanings for a simple basic word!!

A squeeze on lime

I remember there was a famous restaurant in one of the small lanes in Parry s corner in one time Madras, Hamadias.

It was a small eating joint catering to the a variety of customers from rickshaw pullers to big timers, and even Stanley doctors who would one day become surgical registrars of United Kingdom.

The first thing that was served for special customers in their air con restaurant was lime,onions and their speciality pickles, appetisers and mood creators.

It is a curse these days to see lime being crushed under tyres or cut and thrown across the streets.

How it would be if one could offer a lemonade to the ones who are going to travel , to have a good enjoyable journey and a safe return home, with the same lime, than see it crushed and wasted.

The lime is said to have so many good elements with it, that it could save one of the many ailments that one gets these days with junk foods.

We must remember it was this that saved the limeys, on the deck of the sea sick sailors suffering from scurvy.

The acidic lime turns to a different nature once inside the body, that it keeps the pH of the blood stable and soothes the body of its heat and acidic qualities.

It goes great with sea salt , a squeeze of its juice with sprouts can be a great treat, with salads of carrots, tomatoes, and onions it can turn the readers salivate.

Ours is a spiritual country, and any ritual has many offerings of lime, to be used and relished later, and not to be kept and discarded .

Soya - the meat of the month

In this region,this particular month( puratasi) is considered a time for keeping away from meat, those who are regular eaters find this month a dull drab time for food, a forced abstinence and dreams filled with meats and aromatic dishes of that kind.

Soya meal maker has been introduced, and its chunky meat like consistency has been accepted, and one can find it in the pulav s and biriyani look alike dishes.

soya is not part of our culture, the far eastern folks ferment it , which produces substances that counter balance the bad things in soya.

With such a large gathering and most of the nations of the world in it, how could there still be fighting? it only shows rules are being broken, laws are being by - passed and the warring factions are not being punished with sanctions.

May things change for the rights of the underprivileged so that war can be averted, and the powerful can be cautioned with their authority.

A shift from one grass to another

We, in south India, belong to a region and culture which has Rice as a staple food.

With the rise in diabetes in the modern world,with new medicines and changes in life style, i wanted to make a point in a shift from rice to wheat.

Both the cereals are a variety of grass, and hence the title.

The dishes we have with wheat, needs us to chew our food well, a munch and munch, till it gets well mixed with saliva before being swallowed,

With the rice dishes, our chewing is less and the food is quickly gulped.

The rice that comes to the market is bright and white, and hence less nutritious with the loss in polishing.

The wheat is ruddy and muddy and hence more nutritious.

The rice , goes great with pulse powders,( podi) sambar, rasam , curd separately and alone or one after the other, making the lunch a feast.

With the wheat preparations, like chapattis,they go great with dal or vegetables,and equally feasty.

The calorie is more with rice and more of starch , which all the more makes us want to make a move north on the path of wheat.

Rolling the Cameras-master pieces to museum pieces

The clicking game started with a friend's camera, yashika electro 35, he has been kind enough to let me learn, making comments and offering ideas, " hold your breath" and getting the pictures , with no masks and on matt paper, for the best feel of the picture with the clarity of vision.

Another friend offered his Minolta for the class trip to Srinagar, until i got my Yashika fx7 with help from a cousin through the Burma bazaar.

Now the roll films have practically gone into oblivion, making me seek another camera, all the while using the web camera for on the table pictures, until a friend of the street offered, to search on the web for a suitable camera.

Thanks to his help i got a Sony from a centre at Salem, now i can share my words with pictures.

Hot Dogs and Cold Men

Our village is not under the dog catchers net yet, so we can see the dogs running around during the season of their heat, some amongst us have learnt to accept their mating, and others show their mind by throwing stones at them.

These dogs are warm. We men are cold.

The happenings across the world, in matters of democracy, and killings in the name of security, freedom and liberty expose the coldness of us humans in regard to fellow men.

I was thinking if men took more to natural tendencies of living, sharing, appreciating nature, warmth and love, our cultivated cunningness will go, and we can discard all these ammunition of war, and our cruelness to fellow human beings will shift to trust,friendship, exchange of trade, and rise in consciousness.

We seem to lack love and affection, or are we shy to express it, and that suppression leads on to aggressive ,explosive nature, and with it the sadistic wild games of pillage, in the name of humanitarian aid.

A kick away from kickbacks

Let me share some of my village ways
for a doctor.

In the days I started, my practice, I wrote my prescriptions on my
letter head, only to get requests from medical shops, how I would like
my prescription pads, how kind I thought of them , later the color
shades, out they came with my address and clinic timings.

Later came the requests of doc, how about filing up more
prescriptions for these left over medicines, or ideas of this is
better than your best.

Now my thoughts were, "how demanding they are".

Next came on the investigating teams,labs, " we have all these
facilities , and all these results for u in a day, or hours", request
pads with all the investigations titled, and we only have to tick.

How sweet .

Many a patient found multi- tests done more than the requested ones.
How scientific and far searching! out went the request slips to the
dust bin, for the benefit of my handwriting.

For my quietness and selecting their labs,they would offer a slash of
theinvestigations money collected , not fair i refused.

Ohhhh the cartons and cartons of sample drugs and what would we do, i
used to run free camps to get to keep my place spacious, until i found
the ones who came along for the camps to make it a gala charity show
with, this many camps and sort of a spiritual show, me and my wife
only had it as a sort of a picnic and fun loving for our professional
help.

Then there was that out door vacation arranged by a multi- national
company, little did I realize I was taken up for a ride to see a hill
station and spend time on their money , and later feel guilty that I

It all stands true, now with the happenings in the middle east,with Palestine, they offered a place, and now they are being rejected a place in the united nations by the very ones they shared their land.

Why should they be rejected? if they are allowed then war crimes would be sought and the continuous humiliations against them would have to be stopped, or questioned.

Eyeing my plate of eats

It was not a planned arrangement,but it just happened that the herbal soup was taken first and I found it to be difficult to handle with a small saucer, so a large plate was taken, and then came on the sprouts and salads, and they happened to go around the soup bowl and the result is what u see.

Sea salt , seeks salvation at an hypertension meet

It was another of those rural clinical society meetings arranged at Cennys in Salem and the topic was" Hypertension and management".

I was asked to introduce a guest of the day a Deputy Director of Health services for the Salem district, following which the speaker of the evening ,DR Bakthavatchalam spoke a wonderful speech with slide show, on hypertension.

After the question and answers died down , I asked if i could share Nature's sea salt, in relation to hypertension.

I had taken the small vessel that u see in the picture and expressed the best of the salt , its hygroscopic nature of attracting water, its trace elements, and potassium content, its value in the culture and many more points.

On the other side, I shared the contents of the iodised industrial salt, and requested the audience to think and show concern for the revival of the sea salt for its qualities, and its organic nature for our benefit.

A few asked questions on the salt, and if it could be available and hygienic in quality,but none questioned on the benefits in regard to hypertension , even though i stressed its value, with slides of gunny sack, and our kitchen.

May be i need to seek and search the way to the intelligence of the audience with light, experience, words and actions.

Asking for a change in the regime, is the easiest way for the game of war to begin.The Americans have decided that a government in Syria needs to be changed,"as the rulers are brutal to unarmed citizens" how sympathetic of them to feel the hearts of the Syrians.

The sanctions have already been made, cutting the imports and doing business with the Syrians., freezing all Syrian properties,EU and its 27 countries are united in this,now we can prophesy what is going to happen.

Gaze into the crystal ball ,and one would see the things that are happening elsewhere.One does not need to be a historian to notice the steps to the next massacre.

A rare ailment - school sickness

I was aware of this sickness which came on during my long winter vacation of 3 months, during my school days.

The vacation started around mid november and went on till mid february.

My mother cared for me well, and pampered me, and utterly spoilt me with food, and affection, how lucky i was.

I missed the neat ness of the dormitory, the silent walk to the school assembly, the chanting of the school song.

The sound of the spoon and fork on the china dishes at the refectory,the Wednesday movies , which were selected to the highest of values, the titles of which i still remember from " machanas gold ,to the good, bad and the ugly."

I missed the smell of the freshly laundered clothes, neatly laid on the bed, and the warm feeling of getting into the bed of the changed linen on Thursdays.

The Sunday walks down aeroplane stream and other favourite haunts were missed.

How could one who was sick with such a syndrome, get well!

Back to school was the only remedy.

Many would think that getting the vegetables home, and our work is over, certainly not for those who have the time and the interest in them being well done, or least in the capacity of a taster, or a relisher of the dish - some like VijayaGopal, play a part in all the roles, credits.

My preference for the banana pith has been mainly due to the renal colic i once had a few years back, i have heard they play a role in dissolving them.

My lady has been kind to make the dish inviting and palatable.

There is a knack of removing that extra fibre that nature never intended for us to take, when that is done i guess the remaining part is cooking with grace, and the ingredients can be made out in the picture.

Shaking Hands and Sharing Hearts to relive Montfort

I am Yerikadu, one of the daughters of mother nature, and i have played host to many a get-together of clubs, kinds and folks of other lands, but this group is some thing special, they belong to Yercaud and are back at Yercaud.

They are the montfortians of 76' organised by Richie and chew.

I gave them a warm chill welcome with fog and mist when they were on the climb up, i had prepared them for a cascade of water falls on the way with rains a few days earlier.

I could hear a few like PR whisper " I have never been in such mist and fog up here".

I did not keep them indoor with poor horrid rains, nor spoil their next day at school for the assembly, I could literally feel myself walk in tune along with them, with the Montfort band to the assembly.

I felt warm to the hospitality of the school with its principal and staff and students play music, enact skits and sing along, felicitating the old boys with a bouquet and letting them share their hearts, and sing along the school song with them.

I was walking along with them when they were being shown the campus, and how they missed the olden days and their natural surroundings.

I am in many an estate, many treat me with respect, but there is one who treats me more than a daughter, the one at CAUVERY PEAK, Vijayan, his family care for the foliage and the grandeur of what i am .

I saw them share me with the chattering walk , and the care they offer to the animals and the shrubs.

I was along sitting at the lawn listening to the brothers talk of them as children, good family , strong bondage, i decided to keep the estate safe and give it more bounty and good crop for the Vijayans.

The group dispersed, I remembered the words spoken during the meet, "Long live Montfort and its Spirit", I think it should be so too.

Custard Apples - another temptation from mother nature

What a reminder these fruits must have been to get the Englishman to think of his land.

It just seems some time and the season of custard apples is there again.

My grand ma used to get them in baskets to woo the kids to her side, and share the booty,all of them have grand kids of their own and remember those times with respect for her.

Arranged in a cluster on a carpet, the market folks sell them with care, lest the fruits get hurt, and crushed.

I was very scared to try them again this season, as i had memories of catching a difficult cough, after i had treated myself to these fruits last time.

As far as i know, no one seems to make a business of planting these, they are only from the wild,hence no pesticides and fertilisers, or have they also been targeted?

These are fruits which u cannot have more than a few,and get spoilt soon, it is natures way of keeping u from getting greedy.

They clean up the insides and expel the garbage, with a cold i was told.

Memory of how stupidly we have been duped, and continue to be duped regarding all that happened on September 11 ,2001.

There is no reason to agree that we are stupid, but that agreement can start a programme of questions and more questions to clear the title .

Sweet curvaceous tamarind (konai puliyanga)

There were times when i was at home for the winter vacations of 3 months,when i ganged up and was a quiet one, until when it came to dehooking the tamarinds and sweet tamarinds from trees lining the roads.

A long stick with a hook attached at one end , the sweet tamarinds came down with ease.

Not so with the sour tamarinds, they were brought down with perfect aim with stones,

I was reminded of those raids, when i went to the market this morning and saw a bunch of those sweet curvaceous tamarinds on sale, my wife adores them, and i have told her that too much appreciation of them gives one a deafness.

The sweet fair fruit with a black seed is a relish.

May be some one could offer an original name for this species.

My grand-dad had a walrus moustache

Both my grand dads had 8 to 9 kids each, one was clean shaven, and the other had a walrus moustache.

My uncles had around 6 kids each and my dad 2, i have one son and wonder how the next generation will be!

The dwindling number has many reasons, main one being nuclear family and economical factor.

My school was 6 rs per day , boarding and lodging and education, now it is 600 Rs per day.

India is one of the most populated countries, yet we are seeing so many fertility clinics mushrooming.

Not that the other sex is not attractive, more creativity seen and fashions on the arise and cosmetics and businesses making the other gender admirable .

Something seems to be downing the fertility.

The bis phenol -A in the drinking water plastic bottles , they say has a negative effect on the fertility, the other being poly-sorbate in medicines.

Are we all guinea-pigs in some ones project for the depopulation of the world?

Come 11 o clock in the morning and there is a bee line for a famous tea stall on the main road of our village.

The tea walla and his wife, with the help of an old lady who sits at the manual stone grinder , run the shop which makes the crisp vadais.

They make a variety of them all pulses and onions and chillie, deep fried in oil.

My dad wished for them this morning, leaping for this rare request, i went away, and seeing me the pair made some out of the way preparations to fill my old mans orders.

My man was just getting into the curd rice , and seeing me come late, knew i had got his requests, he had two of them, seeing them hot and crisp, he gave his reward of a warm smile.

I am a Libyan ,but not of its soil

I have not seen the sand dunes, nor felt the oppressed heat of the Sahara, but i do feel the anger of the Libyan heart, in their land being raped and its citizens being killed in the name of humanitarian aid.

Colonel Qaddafi is not my dad, but he would make his children proud , for his intentions,as he mentions to Mr president, Obama in a letter "To our son, his excellency, Mr Barack Hussein Obama. I have said to you before, that even if Libya and the United States of America enter into a war, god forbid, you will always remain a son. Your picture will not be changed."

He is a tribesman at heart and his actions are that, down to earth and honest and not cunning, and not devious.

He is stern in keeping the rebels out.

He has the woman of his land, in his thoughts, and has treated them with respect not found in other Arab nations.

U could notice that trust , from the woman body guards he had, they are not show pieces for the photographers.

He has used the wealth of the land from oil, for the use of its citizens, with free housing and health and in the betterment of their nation .

No one hears of the eighth wonder of the world , and the Libyans water ways across the land with under ground pipes.

I have heard he had a hand in the Lokerbie bombing, how easy the witness have been bought with western money, why should the tribesman want to do that ? while he is bringing up banks in his land with interest free loans, and getting the countries of dark continent to unify to a state of united states of Africa.

How gullible is one just accepting the words of the media in denouncing a person, but not willing to nod a good word of a tribesman, or think and search if it could all be true?

Lighting a lamp with words

Let food be thy medicine

Prophetic words from the father of modern medicine , Hippocrates.

Nothing could be further from the truth, with the modern scientific methods , spelling the realities and the goodness of natural food and their medicinal values,with their studies, the latest being that coriander oil is as good as an antibiotic and kills superbugs and MRSA.

It has always been the dictum in the villages that one must find food that would help at times of a disease, and to keep the family members and the rest of the society safe.

The second part of the prophetic words of Hippocrates, reads, "medicine be thy food." modern medicines seems to accept this, if we study the prescriptions , and their long lists, they could make a menu if only they had palatable names.

I am sure if Hippocrates came back he would erase that part, to be understood better, and remove a state where he is recommending lots of medicines as good as a dinner of them.

Arai keerai - a slapping dish of greens

The village market caters to the needs of the green herb lovers.

There is one lady who trades only this ,today she shepherded me into buying this greens called as arai, meaning a slap or half, in the vernacular.

My grand mom has left a legacy in its preparation that i would like to share.

The greens are first washed and allowed to drain, the wetness does not bring out the best of the flavour.

The oil used is just enough to fry the mustard seeds, blush the gram and pink the onions.

The dry greens are added to the vessel, and the cue pin of the paniyaram special is used to preen the leaves and continued to keep them separate, till they are ready to serve, the best vessel is the iron , which gives itself off for the anemic family.

The dish goes well with plain rice.

If u happen to use it as a side dish with rasam,(pepper water) then there is that conflict, of which is better of the best.

I scream

I scream, you scream we all scream for an ice cream.

This was a one liner from a convent girl, of the long lost days.

There were times when we did see the Dasaprakash, ice cream bucket; it brought out the best of ice creams, with no crystals, like what happens with those from the refrigerators.

Aavin ice cream of the mount road , with their cones were so thick and creamy , that if u sat in the parlor u sure will have another, i would sit ,if i had another rupee to spare for the cream.

I indulged in the cassata balls of Arun, and the cake ice creams of Chennys gateway.

Then came the Saravana Bhavan where my kid licked his chemicalised colored mixes, to the horror of me and my wife, sitting opposite refusing to dig into the cream.

This evolution was all within a span of a few decades. Where have all the fresh ice creams gone?

May be my reading has gone too much and is seeing negatives.

Now he is preparing to take the leadership of United States and he suddenly feels he has been wrongly advised regarding Gardasil, he has changed his mind in the speeches.

Did he read the ingredients or was any other cause for him to back down?

Wheat Dosai

I was watching a singing competition on the tube, and there were many adverts, and one was noodles, and how soon it can be prepared.

Kids are cute, that does not mean u can offer them what ever they like, when they are tempted by the adverts.

Let us break advert gimmicks for the health of the family.

I am here to promote a dosai which takes all the time and care for the welfare of the family, to prepare.

We buy whole wheat and dry them in the sun, we get them milled at the local grinders, and do not sieve them , u can stress DO NOT.

We keep the flour safe from the ants and others who have a sense for Best of nature.

We do not add any corn, soy ( cautious of GMO)no softeners.

If the menu has been decided as dosais for dinner, the flour is mixed with enough water, and onions are cut to size, salt to taste , and the dough is ready for dosais.

Minimum oil, preferably gingely, the dosais come out thin and crisp on an iron pan,best with dal and pickle, left over veggies if any goes great, especially ladies finger.

Switch off the tube, or there is no count of the dosais that u consume.

Vaalai poo (Banana flower)

There are many vegetables that are cooked with lots of care being taken, and many helping hands, this is one of that kind and called as banana flower.

This is a dish that can be prepared only for a small family and food relishing guests.

There is no difficulty in getting this in the village market,the flower is literrally peeled with every layer and the small flowers are selectively seperated of its bitter stamen and one tonguish petal,the rest go to make the dish its speciality.

The preferance for the cutlet sort of a dish is our vadai,but i prefer the boiled coconut grated dish which goes great with rice and chappatis.

(it is best to get the family involved in the cleaning process, it bonds and binds on its way to the table)

Mob Kids who robbed

Why does a silent quiet kid, turn into a rogue when he joins a mob?

I had heard earlier that the kids, in many countries cannot be scolded at home, and if they are, they are to report at school, and the social security would come to take away the parents .

So now that the London streets are being looted by kids who are still in teens and even younger,i wonder if any parent would feel guilty, that they had been quiet ,when they need to have instilled strictness at home, and not to indulge in looting,and given moral grounding.

How come, a simple thing of a kid at home, not be admonished by their own parent, why should the government come into the welfare of a home?some thing we Indians cannot understand ?

Who is responsible for the mobish acts of the kids on the street ?Will the parents be allowed to wack/talk their kids and bring sense into them at least now, or will the kids be treated with medicines, as one with mental diseases, by the medical authorities?

The kid was coming home for the weekend , and we, not used to this sort of home coming , we were at a loss,my lady came out with a sweet wave, and dished up a pan cake , a name i don't know other than Obitu.

ingredients , dal

jaggery, brown

white flour

cold pressed gingelly oil

The dal is first cooked and then made into a softness in a blender and the brown sugar stoned and the two are mixed well, and made into balls.

white flour is made into a paste with water, and to a state of easy handling to make it a cover for the sweet balls.

Rolling pin is used to make the floured ball into a small pan cake, they are oil patted on a dosai pan with clothed grill iron.

Like the advert says , "one is never enough".

Parrot cards to tarot cards

South India is the home to parrot card fortune telling, u can find such a reader at the temple festivals, or a weekly market.

A typical reader , has a box with a caged parrot or two, cards with a book and a roller resin mat, he can put up shop any where and give a reading for a few rupees.

It can be a simple ease time for one who is troubled with a complex worry at home or business, or for others a pass time.

A long time ago when we had white as a Sunday uniform, and had gone for walks with our friends at our school, we had met one of these parrot fortune tellers.

We had joked and asked a reading for friends, and one of us said why do not we ask a reading for our dorm warden who was one of the priest, who has taken up a vow of celibacy, and Sebastian was his name.

The teller read out the usual call " namba Sebastian ikku oru seeetu edu, nall parthu edu"the card that the parrot took was one of a handsome deity with his consort at his side.

we knew what ever the reading was it was all bull.

I am one who is against the use of animals and birds for entertainment ,and have got into many a scuffle with the animal trainers here.

I found the tarot cards a chance to make readings , and a way for calming a troubled mind.

I some times pick it up myself,or for my lady or friends.

Fluoride awareness week

This is one week of the 52 weeks to create an awareness about fluoride, so that we may be healthy right through out the remaining weeks.

Our village water has been disapproved of drinking , reason being fluoride content is high.

We hear of water being fluoridated , tooth pastes having fluoride, (with prints in small words, if children swallow more than a pea sized amount , to call the emergency.)

There was a line from a friend, "how can people accept in a mass to a speech of a leader," when it is detrimental to their well being, this could be a main reason for yielding to commands.

For the raisin lovers, earlier we used to get raisins of the dark shade, naturally sun dried, we have forgotten them these days, as the yellow coloured sulfuryl fluoride fumigated ones are more in the market, as they are less prone to fungal destruction, with least concern for the humans who consume them.

(this practice has been banned recently, wonder when the banning will bring on an effect .)

We have heard of dental flurosis, skeletal damage with flurosis, yet we accept them when it is added to water and paste!!!

Do u really think this addition would safe guard our teeth, while the whole world eats junk and drinks tins and bottles of sodas, with no restrictions, and no one seems to blame them as the cause of dental diseases.

Very cunning of the aluminium industry to get their waste, fluoride into drinking water , how devious.

Looters and Arsonist

Way back , following the assasination of Ragiv Ghandhi, our small place had seen the likes of never before, looting,arson and rampage of the kind that is happening in London now.

No cops were seen, youngsters with sickle and sticks were on the go , folks were nervous, shops were looted and homes were struck down, a car was even pulled out of a garage and set up on fire, cinema houses were entered and set fire too.

We can be sure such things, can be a cause of many a disturbance to a wealthy family or an industry.

Following this episode, many elites in the place have got steel and iron grills to homes, and some have even licence for a fire arm.

What ever the cause and what ever the solution, nothing changes, as the gap between the haves and have not s have widened, and the temptation is too much for those who have less , more laws will get passed and freedom is less.

It is heart breaking to see violence being shamelessly allowed, encouraged, and destruction to hard earned civilised living quarters, and shops.

May be the parents , teachers and the government will be more strict to prevent such happenings.

Creepers are not creeps

The most nutritious of the vegetables are the creepers, who have not been recognised for their taste and benefits.

I have heard that nothing can be more sinful than to cut a creeper, and drop it into water, to make it ooze its minerals,discard the water, and then consume the left over as a richness, but that is what it seems we all do.

So we will not allow that with the dish of the day, the snake gourd .

The snake gourd seemed to beckon me with its looks and freshness, at the market,3 rupees can fetch one the length of a wide palm span, enough for a small family.

The trick in vegetables is never soak vegetables after they are cut,( or save that soaked water for cooking) u can wash thoroughly before cutting.

First dal is soaked which goes with the gourd dish, then blended for 5 seconds to help in cooking, the onions and mustard seeds are fried and then the gourd which has been cut into thin pieces are added with the dal, covered with enough water and allowed to boil in a pot of clay for best flavour, minimum salt and chilli is added to avoid the loss of original taste.onions and coriander leaves, turmeric, make the dish colorful and aromatic and help some in fishing for the onions a great game.

The dish goes great with rice or chapatis, take care to have extra of the gourd, and the chapatis for the second helping.
